2007 Walt Disney World Marathon Report: Runners Emails & Comments

I hit 2 water stops that were out during the race, and quite a few of the medical tents ran out of biofreeze which people were also using to keep cool. I am a walker and finished at 7:14 (which was really a time of about 7:08 because of my start time). Since the heat slowed people down so much, Disney should have kept the "official" time running longer. A lot of people finished after I did and it is disappointing not to have an official time on the race websites etc. Overall the race was fun and I'm eager to do it again.

Just curious, but after reading the article about the aid station running out of water, did they also run out of powerade? I'm guessing yes since the mix it at the tables, but when I went through at just under four hours there they seemed to have plenty of both. I think a contributor to the problem was there is usually an aid station between the two overpasses (mile 22) and it wasn't there this year. My bad was I popped a Succeed cap right before the on ramp past 21 expecting the water stop to be there and as it dissolved in my mouth I realized why it wasn't such a good idea.

I would have thought someone would have had a cell phone to call for replacements, but maybe they did and they never came.

Poweraid would have been better!! I was lucky and finished the marathon earlier, but had a First-time marathoner friend who finished just under the 7 hour mark and she was quite distressed at the lack of water and no poweraid at the last 4 - 5 miles!! She was told that there were no cups left to put the water in and they couldnt just give the runners bottles of water. Why not!! Must say this was quite disappointing to both of us. Disney marathon on its 14th year, presented itself more like its 1st.

I heard a volunteer at the first Osceola Pkwy water stop say under his breath to other volunteers "they're out of water at the next stop too, but don't asay anything". I didn't have my own fluid as I thought the race would be sufficiently supported. Fortunately I had hydrated well and suffered no ill effects of the heat.

I read the article and the comment form the race director that only one stop ran out was incorrect. I personally experienced 3 stops without water.

I do plan on writing Disney about my experience, but won't do so until I have a final draft that is not so heated.

I hope many 2007 participants would email Disney regarding the lack of water , missing half-marathon medals, etc. Hope Disney will address such issues seriously, considering their entry fee is higher than many marathon races.

Below is the link that I use to email Disney race. Choose "Marathon Endurance" as the subject.

What really cracked me up was the message on the jumbotron the morning of the full with the "expert" saying (over and over again) "if your still on the course after 4 hours only drink powerade" (which was basically my plan all along) but then not to have anything available was really ironic.

I also counted 2 stops totally out of any liquids-(between Animal Kingdom and MGM). It was definately the first time ever in my life I was sorry to see cups of M&M's instead of cups of water. Although I had some water I ended up filching a bottle of PowerAde from a First Aide Station to keep hydrated. (somewhere on the top of a hill before MGM)
