2006 Goofy's Race and a Half Challenge Report: Marathon-Lisa Amos

I must be GoOfY but I've got bling!

Praise God and the biggest hallelujah I can muster up after having just DONE IT! I ran the Disney full marathon today---my first marathon---after having run the 1/2 yesterday to result in aquiring all 3 "Goofy and a Half Challenge" medals this weekend. Whew! That was 39 miles of running in two days. Thank you SO MUCH...all of my friends and family and Lisa Williams and friends at the Z for praying for me. I felt God's hand holding mine the whole way today. It was really kind of funny...as I listened to the music piping through from my Ipod it was as if God was choosing appropriate songs for every step of the way (I had it set on 'shuffle).' The funniest example is when I made my final loop around Epcot and the one and only Moroccan belly dancing song that I have one there (from when I was taking belly dancing lessons from Ilham who WORKS at the Moroccan pavilian in Epcot) played AS I RAN PAST MOROCCO!!!! People must have thought that I was truly Goofy during that, the 26th mile (though I think, at that point, most everybody was strictly concerned with dragging their own selves to the finish line).

The race went a lot smoother than I anticipated...having only gotten up to a 15 mile long run during training. The event was not without challenge for me, though. In fact, I encountered excrutiating pain in both of my big toes from MILE 10 on! Oh my goodness...it took a humongous amount of determination and just taking my mind to a higher level...I had no choice but to run straight through that pain. I found relief at about mile 15 but it started right back up again during mile 18. I have no idea what that's all about and will have to investigate the condition further to see if it's a shoe issue or some kind of common malidy that happens to some runners. I don't know. But I get goose bumps when I think back to all of those miles of...I can't begin to describe to you...dire pain. It was like ice picks driving through my big toes with no relief. That's the best visual I can give you.

Ironically, everything else went so smoothly! I did not tire. Cardiovascularly I did wonderfully! I did the run 4 minutes/walk 1 minute routine and it worked GREAT! I didn't feel naucious, didn't have any muscles cramp up. Other than the toe thing it was awsome!

Matt (my hubby) caught up with my unexpectedly during mile 10 at the ticket and transporation center. How wonderful that was! He snapped some pics with the little disposable camera (we'd forgotten to bring the digital camera today (or the 'indiginal camera,' as Sydney likes to call it). I'll have to post those once they're developed. Dusty had written me a little 'note to mom' for me to read when I encountered struggled and I opened that up just as soon as I crossed into Epcot after finishing mile 24. It was just what I needed! So much more to post but right now...I'm tired. Matt has gone on to Tampa to pick up the children and I'm in my Victorian nightgown---going to attempt to eat something (nothing sounds good) and get some rest. Will write more later.

Oh! By the way, for some reason I can't pull up my results today...I know I came in just under 6 hours (wow, that's a lot of running, huh)? and that was my goal. Well, my goal was just to FINISH that long ole thang! but I was happy. Funny how I found a burst of energy and temporarily forgot my pain to finish with a huge sprint at the end but them was instantly crippled with the pain and could hardly walk to the car with Matt, lol!

Ahhhhh....back at home with my 3 medals...Donald for the 1/2 marathon, Mickey for the full and GOOFY for being daft enough to do them both! I wouldn't have done it differently though!
