2005 Walt Disney World Half Marathon: Colin Weir

Hey guys

First of all it was great to meet everyone again this year it is one
of the highlights of the trip for me as it was last year.

Apologies - I apologise for not making it to the buffet, it was my
intention to do so but i underestimated the efects of 8 days touring
parks and the 5k would have on the kids, i will try and do better in
future, also as my ITB was giving me such problems i did not invest
in a Kilt as i did not decide until i as in Disney if i was doing the
race or not. I promise to show up some where, some time wearing one,
and if you are not there i can post the pictures :-).

As for the race, short version is, Finished in 2.16 PB from Augusts
great Scottish run of 11 minutes. Absolutley over the moon and could
not be happier.

Blow by Blow account if you have the time and the patience.

All week prior to the race i had problems with itb a weird problem at
the front of my knee and 2 days before the race a touch of the cold
which has now developed into a very runny nose and sore throat. (Russ
seemed to be suffering form the same thing maybe there was a bit of a
bug around?)

Anyway decided after doing the 5k (Walking) i decided i had nothing
to lose i could drop out at any time and at the very least i would
get the chance to meet with everyone again.

So i got up at 2.45 had a quick meal of powerade, power gel an a
bannana and headded for the bus stop.

Funny story , when gettting of the bus i stopped to let a lady out
into the aisle from the other side, she thanked me then we got of the
bus, onyl to meet up 10 minutes later at the penguin tent! it was
Daria LOL and it wasnt as if we hadnt met just goes to show how
sleepy headed we must be at that time of day.

Met with Russ, Cheryl, Silvia and Franz, Lani thanks again for the
button, daria of course and others who were there.

When we moved to the start i nipped to the loo figuring i would catch
everyone up but didnt figure on the long line, well the line wasnt
long but i dont know what was going on but it was very slow moving.

Still got to my corral and sat waiting for the start, briefly saw
Lani but she was gone in the corral before i could catch her eye.

I debated whether to nip oput again to the loo but decided against it
but did egret that later.

It was cool Deena Drossin was at the start( i watched her olyimpoc
race oviously with Paula in mind but Deena ran a great race)

Anyhow the gun went and i set off repeating take it easy run your own
race to myself over and over, watch the knee watch the knee, that was
the first 5 miles around Epcot pretty much, except managed to grab a
toilet stop next to a drinks station and got one straight of with no
line an after that no other stops were required. World showcase was
stunning i really enjoyed running it as its not as spectacular when
you do the full.

Silvia i saw your brother up ahead as we passed America i tried a
kick to catch him but my ITB protested so i backed off, that scared
me a bit so a kind of got lost in my thoughts when i checked again 5
mins later he was not there either i had passed him or more likely he
had progressed ahead.

Once we left Epcot and headed towards the magic Kingdon i was having
mixed emotions, surprised my knee was holding but thinking its
imminent collapse must be just around the corner around mile 7ish i
cant be sure i grabbed some bio freeze and slapped it on just as a
precaution. I had a few false dawns en route to the kingdom thinking
its just round the corner at leat 3 times and at one point i thought
we were entering tommorowland when i realised later it was the
transportation and ticket centre.

As we approcached MK i felt my ITB really start to speak to me i
found the course a bit twisty at that point but by Fantasyland it was
really hurting, i took some painkillers and decided that whether they
worked or not i was not walking or stopping for anyone, i thought
briefly about a conversation i had with Russ that morning where he
was telling me the pain he was in in 04 when he finished and that
kind of spurred me on and i found the resolve i needed so a big thank
you for that Russ.

Being honsest after MK the last miles were just a slog particularly
the last mile, i was however delighted to finish. Unfortunatly my
family got caught in trafic and then we struggled to find each other
so i had to hang around for around 90 mins.

So i am pleased and i have to admit it has taught me how fickle our
sport can be, i trained hard had ITB problems last year and had an
extremely hard slog, this year, same training, same issues, but luck
on the day smiled on me.

To all those who did not get a chance to finish, it am truly sorry
but i hope the experience was still positive, by traing , turning up
and competing and doing your best your are still all winners wheter
you race was done at 10 miles 13 or 26.

Congratulations to Sylivia and Russ on speedy sucess of 4.11 and 1.37
respectivley. We are not worthy (Sylvia i will try a max long run of
10 miles if it gets me results like that :-)

Daria, congratulations on yuor Mickey hard earned and well deserved,
enjoy it, i hope your grandson is feeling better.

I unfortunatley will not be there for 2006 however i am planning on
the 10k in October and another half in 07. This is quite a turnaround
as prior to the half i had discussed with my wife the possibility of
stopping all together, i am so glad i decided to wait and see how the
half went before making that descision.

As for the seperate races i initially saw only the negative of not
all meeting up prior to the race etc, but as usual some much more
positive people than myself pointed out some real benefits.

I am going to go to bed to try and recover before bed tommorow and
begin repairing my fence which had blown down so much in the strms we
have had i have hade to take half of it down. Oh that reminds me what
great weather we were blesed with.

I will also spend the next few days establishing my goals for the
year ahead running and otherwise. If no one objects i thought it
might be good to share some of our goals so we can encourage each
other i dont mind ging first :-)

Thats all for now

If your still reading this thanks for sticking with it.

Excuse my spelling it been a long 36 hours

Col
