First of all I would like to join the ranks in thanking Holly for the
site, Charlie for the food, and all the deeds, both veterans and
virgins, runners and race who make this marathon very special.
Other than the weather at the start and a developing knee problem that
started at mile 14, I very much enjoyed the race. I was most impressed
by two events that happened during the race that I witnessed and would
like to share with this group.
The first was at about mile 10 or 11 when I came up on a woman in a
wheelchair racing in the marathon. While wheelchair racing is in its
self amazing, this lady was in a "regular" chair and not the racing
style. The look on her face really made me reflect on what self
determination is and how much guts she has.20
Then second event that I witnessed was during mile 17 or so. I had been
running with a lady in her 70's I guess. This lady was running very
well at about a 9.5 min pace. All of a sudden a young girl in her 20's
came along side us and ran with us for a mile or so chatting then took
off at a faster pace. After the young girl was about 100 yards in front
of us she stopped dead in her tracks, turned around and yelled back to
the older lady "you are my future". Wow. I know that made her day
because it made mine. I later caught up to the young girl and told her
how impressed I was with her totally unselfish comment.
Again to all the deeds. You are certainly a part of my running life and
thanks for allowing me be a small part of yours.
